Question 1

How much does land clearing cost in Kentucky?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the property. The biggest factors are acreage, how dense the trees and brush are, tree size, stumps and roots, terrain and access for equipment, and what happens to the debris. Every property is different, so we walk the site and give you a free estimate with a clear scope and price.

Question 2

Do I need a permit for land clearing?

Accepted Answer

Sometimes. Clearing private land often doesn't need a permit, but it can depend on your county, how much ground is disturbed, and whether the work is near streams, wetlands or floodplain. Larger construction sites that disturb an acre or more generally need a stormwater permit and erosion control. We'll talk through what applies to your property during the estimate.

Question 3

Can you help with an existing septic problem?

Accepted Answer

Start with your local health department or a certified installer. If the fix calls for digging, we can handle the excavation.

Question 4

Can you clear wooded acreage for a homesite?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We clear wooded lots and acreage for new home sites, including tree removal, brush, stumps and roots, debris, and grading so the site is ready for the next step. For climbing, bucket truck or technical removals, we bring in trusted tree service partners.

Question 5

Can you build or repair a pond?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Pond and land work is part of what we do for farm and acreage owners. Larger ponds and dams may need permits, so we'll talk through what your project requires during the estimate.

Question 6

Do you haul away concrete or demolition debris?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We handle concrete and asphalt removal and structure demolition, including loading, haul-off and site cleanup.

Question 7

How far does Mattingly Excavating travel?

Accepted Answer

We work across Central Kentucky and Southern Indiana, including Bullitt, Jefferson, Hardin, Nelson, Spencer, Shelby and Oldham counties in Kentucky, and Clark, Floyd and Harrison counties in Indiana. For larger projects we may travel further, so call and we'll tell you honestly if it's a fit.

Question 8

Do you install septic systems?

Accepted Answer

No. In Kentucky, septic systems must be installed, altered or repaired by a state-certified installer under a health department permit. We provide the excavation and site work for those projects.

Question 9

Do I need a permit for excavation work?

Accepted Answer

Many projects do require a permit from the county or city, especially septic systems, foundations, and anything that changes drainage. We can help you understand what your project is likely to need, but the permit is typically pulled by you or your builder through the local office.

Question 10

Who calls 811 before digging?

Accepted Answer

Utility lines have to be located before anyone digs. The 811 locate request is usually made by the person or company doing the digging, and utility locating requirements are reviewed during your project assessment, and 811 must be contacted before any digging.

Question 11

What happens to the trees and stumps when you clear a lot?

Accepted Answer

It depends on what you want. We can selectively clear to keep the trees you like, grind stumps below grade so they don't regrow, and haul or chip the brush. We'll talk through your options before we start.

Question 12

What does site preparation include?

Accepted Answer

Site prep covers the steps between raw land and a build-ready lot — clearing, grading to the right elevation, planning drainage, laying out utility runs, and prepping pads and driveway bases. The exact scope depends on your project and your lot.

Question 13

Can you work on both residential and commercial jobs?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We take on residential projects like home sites, driveways, and septic systems, as well as commercial work like pads, parking areas, and site development. Tell us what you're building and we'll let you know if it's a fit.

Question 14

What should I do to prepare before you arrive?

Accepted Answer

Mark anything you want protected — favorite trees, landscaping, sprinkler heads, pet fences — and make sure we can access the work area. We'll walk the site with you first so everyone's on the same page.

Question 15

Do you handle the dirt and debris removal?

Accepted Answer

In most cases yes. We can haul off excess spoil, stumps, and brush, or leave material on site for you to use as fill if you prefer. We'll sort that out when we scope the job.

Question 16

How do I get a quote?

Accepted Answer

Call us at 502-671-3465 or fill out the request a free estimate form on any page. The more detail you can share about the lot and what you're building, the better we can prepare before we come look at it.
